I am really shocked when I read that a Doctor tried to kill his own children. This is a big shame but this is compounded by the foolish trust these women put in their husbands. It has to do with the society, in India the society (relatives, neighbors) poke their nose in other people's life. Women need to have the courage to give a damn to what the society feels and desert such useless men.

But I feel the 50 million number is at least 50 times exaggerated. Because ultrasound scans for detecting the sex of fetus has been available in many parts of India only for the last 20-25 years. And it is banned by law at least for the last 15 years. Even infanticide is not reported throughout India, only in selective areas. But domestic violence related cases are in their thousands possibly even in hundreds of thousands. Many go unreported. Insufficient care during pregnancy is due to illiteracy, poverty and the unavailability of government hospitals rather than deliberate inaction.

Sure this is a problem that has to be tackled and I believe the government and the society are moving slowly towards bridging the gender gap with initiatives like reservation for women in parliament and legislatures. The progress has not been uniform. While the South and West has made better progress in almost every area, Central, north and east India have a long way to go. But if they call abortions as genocide then I think the US and the West would rank first on genocide. Words like genocide have to be used carefully.

Hey Linda,
Great to read about your experiences in India. To come to India and love it requires a very open mind. You need to accept it with its hundred thousand faults and see the beauty in so many small things there. Am an Indian too and loved ur blog. :-)

I like your particular way of writing, it quite balanced and not all hunky-dory. I am an indian who faces these dilemma's in my daily life. Sometimes, I feel blesses for being here and the next moment I curse it. But, It comes so naturally to us that we don't think it as a matter of analysis. I am adding your blog to my blogroll and would love to read your sojourns through india.

Dear Linda-Sama,
Namaste! Greetings from someone who luckily happened upon your website. I felt compelled to say hello and tell you how much I enjoyed reading about your trips to India.
I have always wanted to go to India. Ever since I was twenty-four and accepted a spiritual master and was initiated by His Divine Grace twice and was given the spiritual name of Agastya Muni.
That was after I spent a year in Viet Nam as a young Marine. So my early youth was quite busy with amazing adventures but, like I mentioned, I always felt regret because I have never been to India.
Anyway enough about me. I am an old geezer now. Fifty-eight. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go to Delhi or see the Taj Mahal or visit South India like you. You are so blessed. I ofter wonder how it is that some individuals are able to travel to all of these holy places. You must have such wonderful good karma. I was sorry to read how you became ill on that last trip. Hopefully you will stay in fine health during this upcoming trip. Good luck Linda. I wish I could be going to India at the same time. You have a gift when it comes to writing and photographing interesting people and places. I enjoyed visiting your website.
What I would give to visit Mathura! Orissa, Madras, etc. Well, take good care and have a wonderful upcoming visit to what I have always known since my twenties as being the holiest country in the world, Mother India. God Bless and Happy trails, Agastya Muni.
